Let me tell you my story, I work in Tokyo. Last week I had lunch with the Japanese Head of my department. I was the only Indian and so I asked him the question every Indian asks, “Have you been to India? He said no. I then asked him, “What is the image of Indians according to you?” He answered, “ Well, Indians are really changing the world with technology advancements” and I was surprised. I asked him how do you know this even though you haven't gone to India and he said this line and I quote the exact same line, “If you want to see India, it's not necessary to go India, just visit Silicon Valley and you will see what you guys have done. ”

Two experiences I had outside India, which I would like to share here and may answer this question:
Spain: When I was working in Madrid, one of my Spanish colleagues told me:
'Chit, when I was growing in the 60s and not eating food. My mother used to say me, "There are kids in India who can't afford food, so please finish it." And today we see India as an emerging global power, and you guys are doing great in many fields. Things change in life with time, and in coming years India will be a great power.'
我在印度以外的國家，有過兩次經歷，我想在這里分享，也許可以回答這個問題：

I am staying in Netherlands for few weeks due to work and yesterday while I was sitting alone at the bar and an old guy came and sat next to me. After exchanging few smiles and a Prost we started talking to each other. I soon realized he knew a lot about India specially its economy. So here’s a small part of our conversation
Me: Have you ever been to India?
Old guy: No! But I drive an Indian car.
Me: Really?? (confused)
Old guy: Yeah!! Jaguar
we both smiled :)
Old guy: You guys are doing really good. Before it was the European countries which used to overtake companies in Asia and now its you Indians doing the same.
And soon he started naming all the Indian giants and their achievements and how Indian economy is changing. He also mentioned few Indian takeovers which even i wasn't aware of.
So!! Yes the international image of India is surely improving.

It was summer 2015. I had landed in Tokyo few days back for my summer internship. I was staying at an accommodation tailor-made for foreigners in Nagareyama near Tokyo. It had people from at least 10 other countries. We had a shared kitchen and dining space which ensured frequent encounters with different nationalities.
I met a new guy that night, an African. He asked me where I was from. “India”, I said.
“Oh! I know about your country. You launched a Mission to Mars right?”

No, It’s turning into worse.
I worked in Wipro been in U.S. for short period. I stayed in Dallas for 2 months observed a lot, lifestyle of U.S. and Indians. Most of the time I felt regressive, when I met Indian over there. Me myself is an Indian, It’s not about ruining our country reputation. It’s a facts I’ve seen. Indians are racist to other Indians in foreign land.

There is meeting with our Branch M.D. (Indian), in the evening, it’s been around 5pm, it’s checkout time for locals from their job. But our Indian M.D. lost in a topic, The locals Employees were shutting their lappy and packing their bags to leave home. Our typical Indian M.D. shouted on the employees, American branch head, took control and requested our desi M.D. “ask apologize” to his employee.

The image of India is going to get worse.
The turning point was when they overtook the UK and France economically.
The western world is turning against India exactly like they did against Japan in the 1980s, then China in the 2000s once they start becoming an economic power.
India isn’t quite there yet but it will be some day maybe not too far away. Likely in my life time.
That’s why the western state controled media is going all out on demonising India.
印度的形象會越來越差。

I'm afraid India doesn't have a great reputation in Europe. I am a person of Indian origin, and I carry a British passport. However, every time I go to different border controls in EU countries, they stop me, thinking I am either Indian or Pakistani and wondering if I am here for illegal immigration. But when I show them my British passport, they tend to take a step back and start asking me about the weather in London, etc., and then they let me go.
Illegal immigration from India is indeed a serious concern, even in the UK. If you go to the Balkans and carry an Indian passport, you may be questioned for hours, and some may even deny entry. However, we do have a lot of skilled Indians in Europe as well, and they are doing just fine.
It's also worth noting that the Indian government turns a blind eye to illegal immigration, which has really frustrated various European governments. So, to cut to the chase, India doesn't have a great reputation in Europe, I'm afraid
印度在歐洲的名聲恐怕不太好。
我是印度人，持有英國護照。

India has a large pool of people who follow legal immigration channel, but the illegal channel is very very big and many Indians would do anything to escape India. In India the illegal channel is never spoken about nor shown in the news but its real and happening. Many are desperate to reach Europe and USA in the illegal way. Since the illegal outnumber the legal, the reputation of Indians abroad is at stake. Majority of Indians who move to west wish to settle there forever and never return to India. The small numbers that return mostly due to visa problems and less likely due to own preference call themselves desh-wapsi are treated like gods for 24 hours, they even open YouTube/Instagram channel glorifying their return in the form of click bait content thereby exploiting the national pride emotion of the average India who watches their comeback videos and helping them make money from their own innocence. Those who returned to India for good will understand in one hour that in India they are just another brick in the wall.

Why is that important? What an American or Brit thinks about Indians is not going to change a lot. The median thinking has always been India being a poor nation with some IT nerds. The thing that should first improve is how an Indian perceives another Indian. That unfortunately is still colored by caste creed and regionalism.

I would personally think it is getting better, but it is still an overall negative image because of apparent manifestations of poverty and backwardness.

It depends on how news about India is reported in different countries. The emphasis is on bad news stories. ‘Dog bites man. No news. Man bites dog - it’s news!’
However, India is learning & addressing this issue with its own news channels like WION. It regularly reports on India’s remarkable achievements. This channel better reflects people’s experience of Indians & India.

as long as there are people shitting on railway tracks and fields and any place they can find, indias ‘image’ will never change. add to it the image of rich metro cities resembling garbage dumps and smelling like them too
no matter how well they do in business and income, Indian’s civic sense is zero and will remain so for a long time or forever

It is as simple as this.if we keep improving ourselves, image always improves.
We should not keep doing everything for image.We should do what us good for us.
